Latest & Greatest Treatments of Varicose Veins

by | May 20, 2018 | Vein, Vein Treatment

A varicose vein is a disease of venous system which affects one or both of the legs. It is characterized by the presence of tortuous, bulging, and prominent veins on legs which are blue or purple in color.
Varicose veins, though not a life-threatening disorder, can be bothersome due to the possible complications. These complications include recurrent bleeding, pigmentation, varicose ulcer formation, deep venous thrombosis (DVT), etc. One life-threatening complication is pulmonary embolism that can follow deep venous thrombosis (DVT). This is why it is always good to have your varicose veins treated in a timely manner to avoid potential complications. (you say it is not life-threatening and then say it is in the same paragraph)
There are various treatment options available for varicose veins. These include high ligation and stripping vein surgery, catheter-assisted procedures utilizing laser or radiofrequency waves, laser surgery, foam sclerotherapy, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, and endoscopic vein surgery, etc. The three latest and greatest treatment options for varicose veins are Venaseal, Clarivein, and Varithena.
High ligation and stripping vein surgery are not utilized anymore because better treatment options are available which are less invasive and offer better results. Sclerotherapy still is a trusted method for treatment of varicose veins because it offers good results and is cheaper. Use of laser in varicose veins treatment is a relatively newer technique. A laser is either used through the skin or with help of an endovenous catheter to ablate varicose veins. However, laser surgery may not provide the best results when treating larger varicose veins.
The latest treatment modalities for varicose veins are offering promising results. The following are details about these techniques.
Venaseal is one of the latest treatment options. It is non-tumescent and does not involve the use of heat or sclerosing agents. The procedure involves delivery of an adhesive agent inside the affected vein using the small equipment. This medical adhesive, called cyanoacrylate, seals the affected vein.
This is a safe and effective procedure that does not involve the administration of any tumescent anesthesia. It also saves from potential injuries, like nerve injuries, that can occur using older methods such as thermal ablation procedures.
A few potential side effects include phlebitis, edema, allergic reactions, and bruising of the injection site. These side effects are uncommon.
Clarivein is another newest and effective treatment for varicose veins which offers great results. It treats varicose veins quicker than other traditional or older treatment options.
Clarivein treatment procedure involves the introduction of a catheter under ultrasound guidance in the affected vein. A chemical is sprayed through the catheter which seals the vein. This procedure does not involve the introduction of needles or an incision, consequently, it saves from pain and scarring. It also provides superior results.
After Clarivein procedure, you notice positive results immediately. This procedure also allows you to return to your daily activities on the same day. Finally, there is minimal bruising and scarring after Clarivein.
Varithena is the newest treatment modality with superior and efficient results. This procedure involves injecting polidocanol foam, a medical chemical, into the affected veins. Varithena does not require any incisions and takes less than an hour. You can resume your daily activities right after the treatment.
Polidocanol microfoam is directly injected into the affected vein. The vein collapses and microfoam becomes deactivated after the process. Blood flow then shifts to normal veins around the affected vein.
A few potential side effects of this procedure include allergic reactions, leg pain and discomfort, and injection site bruising etc.
